Spirit Rising - Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park

There are a few wonderful vantage points alone the shoreline to look out over the sacred Spirit Island. This is the spot from where the first internationally famous photograph of Spirit Island was taken. The photograph was presented on the Kodak jumbo board at Grand Central Station in the late 1960’s and introduced the world to Jasper National Park and Spirit Island. I saw this picture as a child and remember it in a photography book. For years I remembered the image and wanted to see this mysterious place. I did not remember where it was, only what it looked like. When trying to decide where to go for a September trip, I stumbled on a photo of Spirit Island and knew it was time. It was everything I imagined it to be.
